Arquivo.pt and CLEOPATRA Project together in funding for PhD students

CLEOPATRA Project is announcing 15 fully-funded PhD students. Subjects include Semantic Web, natural language processing, digital humanities and social sciences, and many others.

Arquivo.pt is directly involved in three of the courses: Incentives design for hybrid multilingual information processing and analytics, in Southampton; National and transnational media coverage of European parliamentary elections, 2004-2014, London (United Kingdom); and NLP for under-resourced languages, in Zagreb, Croatia.

The Arquivo.pt team held a training session at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar last October

Daniel Gomes, the manager of Arquivo.pt, and Fernando Melo and Daniel Bicho, from the development and technology team, presented the seminar “Arquivo.pt: pesquise páginas do passado!” (Arquivo.pt: search pages from the past!) to students of the Institute and other people interested in learning how to use the digital archives.

Arquivo.pt 2019 Award: Submissions are open!

Submissions for Arquivo.pt Award 2019 are officially open! The deadline is May 3, at 1 pm (Lisbon time).

The three best works will receive a total of 15 000 euros.

Individual or group works on any subject are accepted. The only requirement is that they use Arquivo.pt as their main source of information.

Arquivo.pt exhibition in Lisbon

Some of the pages archived by Arquivo.pt have taken to the streets this January. During the month of January, six iconic pages from Portugal’s recent history will be displayed in the lobby windows of the Secretaria-Geral da Educação e Ciência, at Avenida 5 de outubro, 107, in Lisbon.

The exhibition is open to the public all day long until the 31st January and shows examples of pages which, nowadays, can only be visited through Arquivo.pt, such as the result of the 1996 Presidential Elections in Portugal, the Expo’98 page, or the first home page of the RTP television network, published in 1998.

This exhibition is itinerant, so if you are interested in bringing it to your city or institution, please contact Arquivo.pt.

EXPO’98: Twenty years by Arquivo.pt

With the theme “ “Os Oceanos, Um Património para o Futuro” (“Oceans, a Heritage for the Future“), EXPO’98 took place in Lisbon, 1998.

Considered a turning point for Lisbon and Portugal, from May 2 to September 30, 1998, the event attracted around 11 million visitors.  EXPO’98 also had as its purpose to highlight the 500 years of the Portuguese Discoveries.

The importance of EXPO’98 did not stop there:

  • It was a strategic project for the country and culminated with the regeneration of an area of about 340 hectares in the eastern part of the city, next to the Tagus River.
  • Attended by 146 countries and 14 international organizations.

However, as in the digital world, much of the information disappears after a short time, only with Arquivo.pt you can even browse EXPO’98 page, serving as a historical and research base about the event.

A moment that Arquivo.pt keeps for the memory of those days not be lost and for future research about their impact on the lives of all Portuguese.

Arquivo.pt celebrates the World Digital Preservation Day with free training

November 29 is the World Digital Preservation Day 2018 (#WDPD2018).

To celebrate the date, Arquivo.pt will offer a free training on Web Preservation. The objective of the training is to maximize users’ productivity in exploring the service.

A minimum of 10 participants is required. Registration is free. 

The event will begin at 2:30 pm (see full schedule below), in the Pequeno Auditório located at FCT-FCCN (Avenida do Brasil, 101 – Lisbon).

Webinar Web Archiving in academic libraries

“Curation of preserved websites – how it works” was the subject of the webinar promoted by  Associação Portuguesa de Bibliotecários, Arquivistas e Documentalistas (APBAD, Lisbon), the Portuguese association of librarians, past October 9, and presented by Ricardo Basílio, librarian and digital curator at Arquivo.pt.

Gathering the online memory of the Universities

The hands-on presentation showed how anyone, even a non-TI expert, can adequately capture, store and replay a website or a social page of an institutional website. Basílio also gave specific examples on how to gather and share collections of institutional contents previously published on the Web: a list, an exhibition, a recovery of a past content to be published on Twitter or Facebook, etc.

A librarian can be a curator of websites

Human and qualitative evaluation is the focus of the digital curator, even when we use such a proficient tool like Webrecorder. The most important point is to enable librarians to practice micro-archiving and create local collections.

Arquivo.pt Award will be back in 2019!

Arquivo.pt will distinguish again in 2019, works that make use of web information from the past in a useful and innovative way.

There will be 15 000 € in prizes:

  • 1º place: 10 000 €
  • 2º place: 3 000 €
  • 3º place: 2 000 €

Proposals can be presented by individuals or groups. The winners will be those that best promote the usage of preserved web information and the services provided by Arquivo.pt.

The contest will follow the same format as in the previous edition and will be open to everyone regardless of their area of study or activity.

The definite rules and application dates will be announced shortly. Applications will be open in early 2019.

First edition winners  (Arquivo.pt Award 2018)

The first edition, in 2018, awarded 3 proposals. The 1st prize went to the team led by Ricardo Campos, INESC TEC researcher and professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT) with the project Conta-me Histórias, a platform which automatically generates temporal narratives from online news about topics submitted by its users.

For Ricardo Campos the award was:

“An important boost for the project, and thanks to this award, other research works or even commercial applications may be come up.”
