  1. How does image search work?

    The Image Search uses only information preserved by Arquivo.pt. Users also can restrict the period of time of the search. Every result has a link to the web page preserved by the Arquivo.pt, which contains the image.

  2. How does advanced image search work?

    Advanced Image Search lets you search for expressions, exclude certain words and images from a given site (e.g. search for images from the past from a government website only).

  3. Historical dates: can I filter the image by date or event (eg EXPO’98, Euro 2004, among others)?

    Yes. The Image Search runs a query on the text in the preserved websites, so you’re able to look for specific dates or historical periods.

  4. Can I search for images by categories (e.g. Prime Minister)?

    For now, the user is only able to search for images related to a text query.

  5. Can I select the size of the image?

    Yes. Select “Options”, then “Size” checkbox and select from Small, Medium or Large.

    Yes. Select “Tools” and then select “Format” box.

    Select from the calendars below the search box.

  8. How long does it take until an image is available for searching after it has been archived?

    One year.

  9. What are the sources from the collected images? Only “.pt” domains?

    The source of the collected images are the pages preserved by Arquivo.pt. Although there is a greater amount of information collected from the “.pt” domain, there are also images and pages collected from other domains.

  10. Can I choose the source of the images I want to search?

    Yes. When searching for images, you can restrict the search of images to a specific site.

  11. How do I find the source of the searched image?

    When you select an image, a viewer is displayed with details about the image including title, date and URL of the page that was preserved, as well as some other information, including date of collection and dimensions in pixels.

  12. Are there any restrictions on the use of the available images?

    Arquivo.pt is a free digital preservation service offered to authors of the web. The images, as well as their restrictions of use, are also preserved.

  13. Am I protected against images with inappropriate content?

    When searching for images, a filter is used to hide non-safe images from the search results (Not Safe for Work) However, the user can choose to disable the safe search

  14. Can I report images with inappropriate content?

    Yes, but the “report problem” feature should be activated only in cases of graphic content when SafeSearch is set to “Exclude inappropriate images”.
