The winners of the 2026 Arquivo.pt Award were announced by PÚBLICO newspaper, the official media partner, on July 13, 2026.

A total of 58 submitted papers were received and approved.

The awards ceremony will take place during the closing session of the Ciência e Inovação 2026 meeting on July at the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa.

1st place – “Clique Aqui Para Perder”

The winner of the 10,000-euro prize was the work “Clique Aqui para Perder” (Click Here to Lose) created by Ingra Gonçalves Barreto.

The result of this work is a collection of real-life cases, frauds, scams, and schemes that spread across the Portuguese Internet between 2000 and 2012. The website provides a glossary and a section of useful resources for users who want to understand the phenomenon of scams and, at the same time, protect themselves.

For example, the scam known as “phishing” is mentioned on a web page preserved by Arquivo.pt in the year 2000.

2nd place – “Olh’ó Regional”

The second prize, worth 3,000 euros, was awarded to the work titled “Olh’ó Regional”, by Miguel Ramalho and João Carvalho.

“Olh’ó Regional” is a web platform that provides and analyzes data on regional newspapers and news in Portugal over the past 30 years. Its goal is to test the creation of a repository of regional news from Portugal with sufficient scope and variety to enable analyses that help shed light on the reality of local journalism in Portugal.

For example, an analysis of newspaper content, as shown on the map of the country, reveals that some districts receive extensive news coverage, while others receive little. It also shows that sports is a much more frequent topic than climate change.

3rd place – “Portugal, a que custo?”

The third prize, worth 2,000 euros, was awarded to the work titled “Portugal, a que custo?” (Portugal, at what cost?) by Bernardo Morais Chagas.

The project extracts economic data from Arquivo.pt and calculates an Economic Difficulty Index dating back to 1996. The result is an interactive website featuring a news timeline, a purchasing power calculator, and an educational quiz.

For example, in 2005, the minimum wage was 375 euros per month. With that income, buying one square meter of housing cost 6.00 times the monthly wage. The Economic Hardship Index for that year was 73%. This provides a historical perspective on the cost of living.

Honorable mention .PT: “Arquivo eleitoral”

The DNS.PT Association awarded an Honorable Mention . PT to the work “Arquivo eleitoral” (Electoral Archive) by Filipa Ribeiro.

The Electoral Archive is a digital platform that collects and organizes more than 12,000 campaign promises made by Portuguese political parties between 2002 and 2025, allowing users to search for and compare proposals by topic, party, and election. By using Arquivo.pt, it retrieves election platforms and campaign pages that have since disappeared from the Internet, making historical political information accessible, verifiable, and searchable. The project promotes democratic transparency and highlights Portugal’s digital heritage through a public service tool.

For example, it allows you to compare all the parties’ campaign promises related to health care in the 2025 Legislative Elections.

Honorable mention PÚBLICO: “Casos Mediáticos”

The newspaper PÚBLICO, a media partner of the Arquivo.pt Award, has awarded an Honorable Mention to the work titled “Casos Mediáticos” (High-Profile Cases: Understanding How the Media Covers Economic and Financial Crimes) by Ana Francisca Gonçalves and Rodrigo Barrocas (Malpique Team).

The project consists of a web platform that organizes, systematizes, and allows users to explore media coverage of cases of economic and financial crime in Portugal, based on journalistic content preserved by Arquivo.pt over time. It also includes a section on media coverage indicators.

For example, the “Explorar casos” (Explore Cases) section allows users to view cases such as the “Monte Branco Case” from 2006 to 2012.

Panel: “Digital Preservation in a Municipal Context—Challenges and Potential Solutions”

Digital preservation is an increasingly important issue for public agencies. Municipalities, for example, are required to implement a digital preservation plan (Portaria n.º 112/2023, art.4º). On the other hand, digital content is scattered across many formats, systems, and even different organizations and jurisdictions.

The panelists were José Borbinha (INESC-ID, IST, Universidade de Lisboa), Pedro Penteado (DGLAB, Direção de Serviços de Arquivística e Normalização), Helena Neves (Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, Direção Municipal de Cultura, Departamento de Património de Cultural, Divisão de Arquivo Municipal) and Ricardo Basílio (Arquivo.pt-FCCN-FCT).

Sharing knowledge, best practices, and resources is a way to accelerate the preservation of collective memory.

Website and Social Media Preservation: 5 Good Examples for 1 Solution

In this panel presentation at the APBAD meeting organized by Arquivo.pt, examples of best practices for preserving Web content were provided. They were as follows:

Perform a high-quality website harvest (once a year)

Curate websites for preservation purposes

Create website records in the catalog with a link to the history

Identify and collect external web content related to the organization’s mission

Use Arquivo.pt services in partnership

Memory of Municipalities on the Internet

The online exhibition “Memória dos Municípios na Internet” (Memory of Municipalities on the Internet) was an initiative launched by Arquivo.pt in 2019 to highlight the value of the digital content published over time on the websites of Portugal’s 308 municipalities.

We invite all the professionals here to tour the exhibition and see how well their municipality’s website is maintained.

Data Collection Criteria for the Portuguese Web (Poster 1)

The Web is a publishing space without limits. Every day, all kinds of content are published, such as institutional information, business and industry services, content created by individuals, news from accredited media outlets, content of dubious veracity, fake news, and entertainment content. Is it possible to collect this content in a Web archive? What are the limitations?

We would like to highlight the criterion “topics of interest to the community,” which we use to conduct special collections, such as when we are collaborating with researchers. This was the case with a collection on artists and art galleries, in collaboration with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Art Library (2021), and the collection on Feminism in Portugal, in collaboration with researchers from the FEMGlocal Project (2026).
