On June 16, 2026, the Arquivo.pt team welcomed Makiba Foster, leader of the Archiving the Black Web initiative. The purpose of the exchange was to share knowledge and best practices on how to involve local communities in the preservation of content considered important.

Here, we share some ideas and links that came out of this meeting.

Vision of the “Archiving the Black Web” Project

Archiving the Black Web was founded in 2019 in Florida, United States, with a special focus on communities that are underrepresented on the web. Its vision is to empower the community to preserve its own memory and culture.

The project’s strategy has involved offering training courses on the preservation of Web content. The training program is called WARC School (Web Archiving School).

By providing people with the tools they need to create a web archive featuring local, community-generated content that captures community dynamics, the Archiving the Black Web project contributes to the community’s self-esteem and development.

How Arquivo.pt encourages community participation

Arquivo.pt shares this view on community involvement in Web preservation. The more people who are able to help preserve their websites, the better.

To empower the community, Arquivo.pt offers training, including:

The fourth module, titled Preservation of Websites: Do-It-Yourself!, demonstrates how to save web pages in a standardized format compatible with web archives, using free tools from Webrecorder.net. In other words, it enables individuals or teams to create their own web archives locally.

In addition to its educational programs, Arquivo.pt has created services that allow anyone to save content of interest to them, which is then integrated into Arquivo.pt:

  • ArchivePageNow for saving web pages instantly
  • On-demand captures for high-quality archiving
  • Special thematic collections, usually created in collaboration with researchers

Get inspired and see how your community can be empowered by leveraging the ability to archive memories, experiences, and expressions shared across the Web and social media.

On May 29, 2026, library professionals from the Universidade do Minho, da Universidade do Porto, and Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa  participated in the 3rd edition of the Programa de Mobilidade em Bibliotecas do Ensino Superior (Higher Education Library Mobility Program), organized by the Grupo de Trabalho das Bibliotecas de Ensino Superior (Higher Education Libraries Working Group) of the Associação Portuguesa de Bibliotecários, Arquivistas, Profissionais da Informação e Documentação (BAD). The initiative took place, for the third consecutive year, at the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) on the LNEC campus in Lisbon.

Exploration of advanced services for knowledge

The initiative included a workshop dedicated to exploring advanced support services for science and higher education in Portugal, providing participants with an in-depth look at the digital ecosystem that underpins the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge.

The program included thematic sessions on key tools such as the NAU platform, designed for creating and making open-access MOOCs available, as well as Arquivo.pt, where the inner workings of web content preservation for research purposes were demonstrated. Strategic services such as Educast, and Ciência ID were also presented, underscoring the FCCN’s role in supporting higher education institutions.

Tour of the Data Center and the Television and Audio Studio

During the event, participants also visited FCCN’s data center and professional studio, gaining firsthand experience with technological infrastructure that, though often invisible, is essential to ensuring the robustness, innovation, and sustainability of science and digital education.

The importance of the program for professional development

The Programa de Mobilidade (Mobility Program) aims to promote knowledge sharing, the continuous updating of skills, and the strengthening of ties between information professionals and the innovative services that are part of the daily lives of researchers, faculty, and students. The participation of these three institutions underscores the importance of such collaborative initiatives for professional development and for the consolidation of cooperation networks in higher education in Portugal.
