During the month of August, Arquivo.pt published 10 thematic datasets on the Dados.Gov, the public administration’s open data portal, and improved the descriptions and metadata for the approximately 70 datasets made available to the community.
Cinema, sports federations e firefighter associations, and fire departments are just three examples of topics you can explore using the thematic lists of websites provided by Arquivo.pt.
Did you know there are more than 60 film festivals in Portugal? What are their official websites or pages? What historical content has been preserved by Arquivo.pt?
The datasets provide a broader and faster overview of the topic, as they are focused on specific websites.

Data schema and open formats
Thematic lists of websites use the same data structure to present information in a table. This makes it possible to combine multiple lists into a single one covering thousands of websites.
The lists also allow you to sort the data by subject, location, or alphabetical order, whichever is most useful and depending on the available information.
The data is available in several open formats:
- PDF—a format for sharing and immediate viewing on mobile devices; if you’re curious about a dataset, start by opening the PDF version;
ODT—a non-proprietary spreadsheet format, similar to Excel, that can contain multiple sheets in a single document;
CSV—comma-separated values in plain text, compatible with a wide variety of applications.
Other formats—TSV, tab-separated values in plain text, useful for preventing data breakage where commas are present (for example, cells containing sentences).
The data structure for lists of organizational websites does not apply to other datasets also available on Dados.Gov, such as election-related datasets.
Preserving the history of institutions and organizations
Identifying websites belonging to entities and organizations helps to better preserve digital memory.
We found websites without a preserved history in Arquivo.pt (primarily .com, .net, etc.), websites that are inadvertently blocked, and websites that require further effort.
There are also organizations, groups, and other initiatives that do not have an official website and base their online presence on social media.
The goal is to raise awareness within the community and promote the preservation of content published on the Web. If this content is not preserved, it will disappear over time, and with it, the record of so many things that happen in Portugal.

Each thematic collection of websites offers an authentic journey through Portugal and the diverse aspects of Portuguese society.
Since 2018, amazing projects have been created based on content from Arquivo.pt, but there are still plenty of themes left to explore.
